Creating a Class and Assignment on Turnitin

Introduction

This is a quick help guide on creating a class and assignment on Turnitin. This will enable your students to submit to Turnitin.

The students will then be able to see their similarity percentage and work on areas they need to improve.

You will require a Turnitin account If you do not have a Turnitin account, request one by sending an email to turnitin@ukzn.ac.za using your UKZN Staff email address.

Getting started

Turnitin works best on Google Chrome.

  1. Open your Web browser, and in the address bar, enter www.turnitin.com

2. Select Login

3. Enter your UKZN Staff email address in the Email Address textbox

4. Enter the password you created for Turnitin

5. Select Login

You are now on your home page

Below is brief description of the contents of the home page.

  1. Your personal details menu

In the personal menu under User Info, you may change your password, activate Quick Submit, change the question and answer for the Secret Question, and the way the instructor’s name is displayed.

  1. This area lists all the classes created, both current and expired.
  2. The Quick Submit tab allows an Instructor to submit their work for checking
  3. The Edit function allows the Instructor to Edit the settings for each class under their login.
  4. The delete or trash icon allows the Instructor to delete a Class created erroneously or if they no longer require this class. (Deleting the class from view does not delete the submissions made to the class)

Creating a Class

The first step is to create a Class

1. Click on the Add Class Button

The Create a new Class form requires that you complete this online form for the Class to be created.

Class Type  – Always select Standard

Class Name – This should be a descriptive name, e.g. Entrepreneurship Honours 2023

Enrolment Key  – This key is created by the Instructor and should be relatively easy, e.g. HON2023

Subject Area – This is used purely for statistical purposes at Turnitin, select what area is closest to your area

Subject Levels – Select the appropriate level of student you are teaching

Class Start Date – Is displayed by default, you cannot choose this day

Class end date –  You may choose the class end date by clicking on the date picker.

2. Once all this information has been entered, click on the Submit button

The Class has been successfully created.

The information circled on the screen below must be given to your students to join the class on Turnitin.

3. Click Continue

Creating an assignment

After creating a class you will be on the page of the class and should add an assignment

You are now in the Class and should add an assignment. This assignment will enable students to submit to the Class.

Adding the assignment to new class

  1. Click on Add Assignment

There are two sections on the New Assignment page

The first portion is Mandatory, and the second is Optional (however, this section has a significant impact on the similarity report)

2. Enter the Assignment title.

3. Select the Start date, Due date and Post date using the date picker

The Post Date should always be a minute after the due date. This date indicates the date and time students can begin viewing Instructor feedback.

4. Click on Optional Settings

5. Enter any special instructions you may have for the students.

Allow submissions after the due date (Select Yes/No depending on the assignment requirements)

There are three options under this tab

  • Immediately first report is final

select this option if you wish to enable resubmission

  • On due date

the report will only be available on the due dateExclude bibliographic materials from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment.

7. Select Yes/No depending on the assignment requirements

Exclude small sources?

This setting allows the instructor to choose to exclude sources that are not of sufficient length, from being considered when generating similarity reports. This is determined by the Instructor.

Liaise with your school Research leader for guidance.

8. Select Word count and enter the number of words in sequence to be omitted from the similarity report.

Allow students to see Similarity Reports.

9. Select Yes/No depending on the assignment requirements.

Enable Translated Matching? (Beta)

When translating matching is enabled Turnitin will generate a separate similarity report based on English translations of students’ non-English language submission

This is not currently used at UKZN so you may skip this step

Submit papers to?

Standard paper repository

A copy of the assignment will be stored by Turnitin in the standard repository, By choosing this option Turnitin is instructed to only use stored documents to make similarity checks against any documents submitted in the future.

No repository

Turnitin will not store the submitted documents to any repository and will and will only process the paper to perform the similarity check. This is the option to select if you enable resubmitting the assignment.

Search options:

10. Select which repositories should be searched by Turnitin to look for possible matches.

11. Attach a rubric/form to this assignment.

12. To attach a pre-existing/new rubric to this assignment, select the Launch rubric/Form Manager option.

Importing and exporting rubrics is available under this option.

If you want to save these settings as defaults for all other assignments:

13. place a check in the box.

14. Then Select Submit

You have now completed creating a Turnitin assignment which your students may submit.

Adding students to your class

Ideally, your students should add themselves to your class using the class id and enrolment key per this guide’s instructions. There is, however, an option to add your students manually as a class (Upload Student List) using a preformatted Excel spreadsheet or adding an individual student (Add Student).

Upload Student List

Navigate to your class, click on the class, Click on the Students Tab, then select Upload Student List

You will be directed to a page where you can view the formatting guidelines for the spreadsheet you will use to submit your student list. To view the formatting guidelines, click on More Info.

15. To upload the list click on Choose File navigate to where the file is saved and double click on the file.

16. Click on Upload List.

You will then be redirected to a preview page, if you are happy with the student list select yes, submit. If you are not happy with the list click on no, go back to return to the Upload Student List page.

If you opted to submit your student list, the following screen would confirm the students added to your class.

Adding a Student to your class.

17. Navigate to your class, click on the class, click on the Students Tab, then select Add Student.
